At the basis of the book are the courses that Kandinsky held from 1922 at the Bauhaus. In them he aimed above all at identifying the nature and properties of the fundamental elements of form, therefore above all of the point, the line and the surface. With extreme radicalism, Kandinsky then declared that he wanted to found a science of art: in the further course of his research the problems would have to be solved mathematically, and all future art would have moved along this path. For this assumption and for the discoveries that are exhibited for the first time, Point, line, surface had a decisive influence in various fields, just think of graphics. But what is striking today in the book is above all the outline of a metaphysics of form, much more than the project of an exact science. For Kandinsky the form, in all its species - natural and artificial -, it is a signifying manifestation of a reality, it is a tension of forces, and can only be understood in relation to its invisible background. It is clear that, with this, the boundary of aesthetics is irretrievably abandoned: instead we enter a different realm, where every form becomes a living being - and in this realm Kandinsky introduces us as a diviner, who continually tracks and translates the one in the other, with its disturbing eidetic sensitivity, sound, graphic, chromatic signs.
