He fails in his trials and settles for studying chemistry at the University of Ingolstadt. Upon graduation, he returns to his tests, putting together a monstrous creature from body parts he steals from a graveyard. He sets up a lab to channel lightning into this creature and succeeds in bringing it to life. However, the creature is a corrupt version of human life, grotesque in form. He is repulsed by it, and his horror drives the monster away, cursing its creator for giving it life. Frankenstein falls ill from the trauma and returns home.
