In order to escape her abusive husband and arranged marriage, Jahanara must become an intermediary between the court and Isa, the architect in charge of the Taj Mahal. Soon she finds herself torn between her duty to her mother's memory, the rigid rules imposed on women, and a new, albeit forbidden, love. With extraordinary courage, Jahanara dares to confront the hypocrisy and blindness of the court in an attempt to spare the country from civil war and save her father from his warlike son Aurangzeb, a man whose hatred will extinguish the Muslim enlightenment efforts in the Mughal Empire.
