This novel portrays the difficulties encountered by traditionalist Jews coming to terms with the social changes that rocked Poland in the late 19th century. The central figure of the novel is Calman Jacoby, who stands between the old and the new, unable to embrace either whole-heartedly.Isaac Bashevis Singer was a Polish American author of Jewish descent, noted for his short stories.
