Anotacija
Abused by his stepfather, scolded by his mother, ten-year-old Silas returns, after running away over-night, to find his meagre dwelling empty. Abandoned by his parents - perhaps because they no longer wanted him, perhaps because they feared retribution for his bruised condition - he decides to move elsewhere, thereby escaping those officials “who would not let a boy live on his own, but put him into a Home encompassed by walls, embattled by rules and regulations.” With no real destination, his only companions a discarded toy monkey and Con, a stray dog, he begins his wandering through the Scottish countryside. In a childlike fashion, he perceives preternatural instincts in the behavior of his two cohorts so that the monkey assumes characteristics of an evil genius while the dog gradually becomes a trusted friend. The characters he meets - a withered, half-mad tinker, a well-meaning but hard-headed farmer, and finally, a battered wreck of a man whose mutilated body has forced him into solitude - emerge through Silas’s view as surrealistic figures against the strange beauty of the wild landscape. The pattern and atmosphere of the narrative is reminiscent of Meindert DeJong’s Journey From Peppermint Street (Harper), but Silas is less fragile, less protected than Siebren, so that his decision - to remain on the island with the maimed veteran and the motley company of unwanted animals he has rescued during his quest for security - seems more a rite of passage into manhood than the allaying of childish fears. A haunting, multidimensional story which, because of its allusive style and subtle symbolism, can be introduced to older as well as intermediate readers.
