This record of a small French expedition's nine months' sojourn among the Islanders who live under conditions of the harshest oppression is a unique document. The author's Polynesian wife spoke the language, thanks to her, certain native legends and traditions are here recorded for the first time. Francis Maziere has correlated these with the work of earlier researches and has also carried out researches of his own helped by the Islanders who revealed to him caves never before visited by Western explorers and bestowed on him a precious clue to the Island's secret writing, one of the strangest of its mysteries.
