Hermanns style of narration and illustration is hyperrealistic. His characters are real-life, without any supernatural powers. The stories are gripping and moving and there is always a message to his work, although Hermann admits avoiding deep thoughts, in order to keep the story more interesting to read. It is little to say that he is one of the best living comic illustrators; he had several expos of his work. ABOMINATIONS are not at all representative of Hermanns opus. The book collects 4 short stories published in the 70es and 80es. Two of them are horror stories, showing an incredible amount of violence, which is typical for Hermann. Cage, on the other hand, shows the author at his very best. Massacre, the fourth story, was, by the authors admission inspired by the Sharon Tate murder. Never before or after did Hermann make short stories or horrors, so this book is very atypical for him. Still, ABOMINATIONS proves him as an extraordinary author. Despite millions of sold books, countless awards and his world-wide success, Hermann is virtually unknown in the United States since almost none of his books have been translated into English. ABOMINATIONS is a unique opportunity to come to know Hermann, a complete author, (script, illustration, color) who transforms comics into a sofisticated work of art.
