Often in romance novels, plots resemble those of our treasured fairy tales. There are few romance readers w the poor young woman who is rescued from the cruel stepmother by the enchanting prince. Katherine Kingsley takes Cinderella one step further, however. She delves into the question of what if Cinderella did not want Prince Charming?. As Cinderellas go, Lucy Kincaid is vivacious, beautiful, and caring. She is also Irish, the only daughter of her now deceased father. Her current position as her own stepmother's servant is due, of course, to a terrible trial in her past. Lucy is held in her place by her stepmother's threats to harm those Lucy cares for. Lucy suffers in silence, looking for brief moments when she can sneak out into the world and wander along the cliffs or stroll through the park. In this story, however, Lucy's prince represents everything that she hates. Raphael is British, a duke with several other names and titles arrogantly displayed on a card, and worst of all, he is a Montagu. It was a Montagu who stole Kincaid from her father. Now, Raphael has come to her beautiful Ireland, seeking his lost love, the woman he fell in love with at first sight. She haunts his every waking moment and keeps him from sleep. Raphael is truly a man bewitched by this Irish siren who wanders the cliffs in a red cloak, reciting Byron to the winds. Katherine Kingsley's portrayal of love denied is beautifully poignant.
